Game Notes: Patriots vs. Lions

The following are game notes from the New England Patriots preseason game vs. the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Thursday, August 22, 2013.

*QB Tom Brady played the entire first half the game and finished 16-of-24 for 185 yards before being relieved by backup QB Ryan Mallett.

*Brady has completed 34-of-44 passes for 357 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in three preseason games.

*Devin McCourty and Dan Connolly made their 2013 preseason debuts after missing the first two preseason games. McCourty was in the starting lineup at safety, while Connolly did not start but did enter the game at right guard on the second offensive series.

*2013 second-round pick LB Jamie Collins was in the starting lineup. Collins started in place of Jerod Mayo at linebacker.

*Rookie free agent Joe Vellano from Maryland started at defensive tackle in place of Vince Wilfork, who dressed for the game but did not play.

*Rookie free agent WR Kenbrell Thompkins from Cincinnati was in the starting lineup for the second straight week and finished with 8 receptions for 116 yards, including 6 receptions for 93 yards in the first half. He caught a 37-yard pass from Tom Brady on the opening series of the game and a 27-yard pass in the second quarter that set up a 31-yard field goal.

*Rookie free agent TE Zach Sudfeld from Nevada was in the starting lineup for the second time this preseason. He started as a fullback against Detroit and started in a two-tight end set in the preseason-opener at Philadelphia on Aug. 9.

*QB Ryan Mallett entered the game for the first drive in the second half and finished 11-of-22 for 96 yards with a 9-yard touchdown pass to RB James Develin.

*RB LeGarrett Blount returned his first kick ever in the NFL in the first quarter for a 27-yard gain.

*First-year RB James Develin, who started last week vs. Tampa Bay, caught a touchdown in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a 9-yard pass from QB Ryan Mallett.
