Niners sign kicker Nedney

The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Joe Nedney to a one-year contract.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (March 10, 2005) -- The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Joe Nedney to a one-year contract.

Nedney, who attended nearby San Jose State, is attempting an NFL comeback after missing nearly all of the last two years with injuries.

He hasn't kicked in a game since the 2003 season opener with Tennessee, when he was injured while making a tackle against Oakland. Nedney missed the rest of that season with a torn knee ligament -- and days before last season, he tore his left hamstring and missed the rest of the year.

Nedney has played for Miami, Arizona, Carolina, Oakland and Tennessee since joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 1996. He has made 74.7 percent of his field goal attempts and 98.5 percent of his extra points.

Nedney will replace Todd Peterson, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons last week.
