Paul's Calls: Meriweather out

According to reports, Brandon Meriweather could be cut if the team is unable to trade him before the final 53-man cut-down.

The Boston Globe's Greg Bedard and ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss both have indicated safety Brandon Meriweather could be on his way out of town. Meriweather played the entire second half of Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants, leading to speculation that the fifth-year veteran could be let go. The reports said the Patriots were trying to deal the two-time Pro Bowler and if unsuccessful would release him.

The Patriots expressed interest in a number of veteran safeties this summer including Dashon Goldson, Renaldo Hill and Darren Sharper. Goldson eventually re-signed with San Francisco, leaving Sharper as the best option if the veteran is healthy. If Meriweather goes, expect a veteran safety to be added before the start of the season.

EDIT: Pro Football Talk is citing a league source that says Meriweather was indeed released.
