Tom Brady Press Conference Quotes

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his press conference on media day at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on January 29, 2008.

(on ankle)
"My ankle feels good. My ankle feels great. I practiced a full day yesterday. I think we had one incompletion in practice. It feels great."

*(on if he is the best quarterback to ever play the game)
*"I don't know about that. There have been some – growing up and watching Joe Montana play and watching Steve Young. They were the guys I looked up to growing up, and I've got a long way to go for that. I've still got a lot of playing left. I'm not done."

*(on Randy Moss)
*"I think the thing people don't realize about Randy is his understanding of the game. He is the smartest offensive football player I've ever been around from his understanding of the receiver position, his understanding of football, how to get open, how to manipulate his routes, to how to change up his speed. He knows when to expect the ball as well, based on the route that is called and the coverage that is played. He's been an incredible player. He's had an incredible attitude. He's practiced hard every day. You should have seen him running around yesterday. He is flying down the field. This is our 115th practice and he's still out there like it's mini camp."

*(on how much it helps to have recently played the Giants)
*"I think you can take away the personnel matchups. In terms of the style of defense they play, I'm sure that will change. I'm sure they'll come into this game with some new defenses, new looks, some new fronts. We'll come in with new plays, and probably not until the end of the first quarter, you won't really understand how the game is going to play out. It's always a little more challenging when you play a team a second time. I think there are advantages to it, but at the same time, you have to change up the things that were successful and you have to eliminate the things you didn't do so well. You still have to do what you do. Both teams are here for a reason, and it's not like you want to come into the Super Bowl and try to re-invent yourself as a team, because you got here for a reason. They are an extremely talented team in all phases of the game. We have our biggest challenge by far this week, and hopefully all of the preparation we've had over the last six months has prepared us for this moment."

*(on the chance to make history)
*"With a win in this game it is undefeated, and we've been dealing with that all season. We just put that off every week because we had no control of having an undefeated season in week five. We had control over one game. We have control over one game this week, and everything that we are doing in terms of preparation in terms of the work we are putting in this week, is to try accomplish our goal that we set up at the beginning of the year. At the beginning of the year, our goal wasn't to be undefeated. We didn't come into mini camp saying 'alright we are trying to go 19-0.' It was, 'we are going to do our best to win the AFC East, put us in a position to be in the playoffs, and win the AFC.' Now, we have an opportunity to play in a Super Bowl against probably the hottest team in the NFL right now."

*(on how he keeps his focus)
*"Well, we have a great coach and great coaches who keep us focused on the things we need to be focused on. I think there are a lot of things that are out of your control -- the expectations other people might have or the things people might say about you. The only thing you can control is the way you prepare each week and this team has done a great job of doing that."

*(on having such a platform and what's his purpose)
*"Wow, that's a deep question. My purpose in life? My God. I play football. I happen to do that good enough to get here and have this platform, but I don't think any of us cure cancer. I don't think any of us…you know, you think about the impact you have on people, and if we can perform some type of entertainment for people to change the subject a little bit in life, I think that's a great thing. At the same time, we are blessed to be doing this. We are blessed to have the opportunity to live out, truly, childhood dreams. People say living a dream, but we truly are living a dream. All of us grew up and you wanted to be a professional athlete. All of us wanted to play in a Super Bowl, and to have this spectacle and to enjoy this and to have this experience, we are going to remember this for the rest of our lives. Hopefully, we can all use this platform for things truly fulfilling in our lives, whatever they may be, and that's up to each individual, and probably based on experiences they've had in the past. But in this present time, we are all thinking about how to win a football game. When the season ends, you think about other things that may be of interest in your life."

*(on playing close games as of late)
*"The thing about it is that what happened last week has no bearing on this week. What the Giants did last week in Green Bay has nothing to do with this week. However these teams have played for the last six or eight weeks, it doesn't matter."

*(on why though those games have been closer)
*"We've played some good teams down the stretch, teams that have challenged us. I think there are a lot of factors that play into it. We've been a very prolific offensive football team. I think when the weather changes, offensive football is a bit more challenging, and that's when the defense really steps up and we've relied heavily on them to make the stop and keep the points down, and that's what they've done. When you are watching Green Bay and the Giants last week, it's a bit more challenging to move the football when it's zero degrees out. The great thing is you only have to score more points than the other team. You are not trying to set scoring records. You are just trying to win the game. I am glad we've found ways to win the game, probably different ways, running the ball, playing better defense, and now we are back in a warm environment, so I'm hoping we can get back to how we were playing earlier in the season."

*(on Michael Strahan saying Brady is perfect)
*"I think he's trying to butter me up. He's a great friend of mine. I certainly don't think that way of myself. I think there are plenty of things we need to do better as a team. I think there are plenty of things we all need to do better this week in order to get the win."

*(on how this team compares to past teams )
*"I think every year the team changes. I think every year it's a different team. I think trying to compare teams from each season or Super Bowl years is tough. Teams change so much. The style of teams change, the players change, coaches change, schedule changes, the weather changes, there are a lot of things. I don't think you necessarily compare year to year. There have been great acquisitions throughout the season and we've had great depth, great coaching, and that's why we are sitting here."

*(on the addition of so many free agents this offseason)
*"I'm always happy with additions, especially players of that caliber, but we've had great players in past. I played with Deion (Branch). I played with David Givens. I played with Daniel Graham. I've played with all of these guys who are responsible for the three Super Bowl rings that I already have, and I'm hoping Randy (Moss), Wes (Welker), Donte' (Stallworth) and Adalius (Thomas) and Sammy Morris can experience that same type of feeling because it's very exciting. When the game ends and hopefully you score more points than the other team, it's a hell of a celebration and a hell of an offseason."

*(on how he deals with all of the variety of questions on media day )
*"You just deal with whatever question is asked, and try to handle it the best you can. I'm obviously more comfortable answering the football questions. Those are much easier for me."

*(on if it's worse to deal with Michael Strahan or the paparazzi)
*"Michael Strahan is much bigger and much meaner and much faster, and I sure as heck can't outrun Michael and that's the problem. Everyone else I could probably outrun."

*(on if he feels relaxed despite pressures of the week)
*"I'm pretty low key. I'm pretty consistent, so hopefully that's zen-like. I just try to never be too up and never be too down, and just take things in stride."

*(on if he'll be able to maintain that all week up until the game)
*"You have got to try this week with everything that is going on and all of the attention, especially down here, it's exciting for everybody. So, I think you've got to find ways to contain the excitement so that when you come out to play, you can have the most energy you can. If you wear yourself out throughout the week and you get out there and really need your energy, you are not going to be dealing with a whole lot. I just hope that we as a team can really put whatever may seem important aside so that we can try to perform at our very best when it matters the most. That's why we are here. We are here to win a football game, and that's what this team has been focused on all season, and we've got one week left."

*(on being one of the elite quarterbacks to play the game)
*"Those guys as far as I'm concerned are in a league of their own – Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre, John Elway, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach. Those are the guys when you are a quarterback in this league now, you are looking at those guys as the guys who led the way for you. Joe Namath, I mean these guys, you still watch film of those guys and see the greatness of their play. I just saw Terry Bradshaw a little while ago, four Super Bowl rings and everything he's been through in his life, and you understand how wonderful a person he is. I think that's the greatest part about of all of this. You can share the experiences with people you've always looked up to, whether it be Joe Montana or Steve Young, guys I've really always admired. It's a great bond that you have with people who you've shared experiences with, and more so than anything, people who I looked up to when I was younger, now I have some things in common and that's probably the best thing about it."

*(on if he sees himself as part of that elite group of quarterbacks)
*"I don't think so at all. This is my eighth season. I have so much football to play. I'm 30 years old. I've been very healthy in my career. Hopefully physically, my skills continue to improve, and hopefully mentally I continue to gain a better understanding of the game. Our coaching has been so stable, and the best thing throughout my career is that I've had to deal with one offense. I've never had to change offenses. I've been in the same system for my entire career. For me to never have had to change schedules, to have had the same head coach, there are a lot of factors that play into being in this game and I think that's one of them – the history that we've had here."

*(on watching the Packers/Giants game)
*"I was glad I was in my living room watching that game because it was cold. I don't know how those quarterbacks played in that game because it was freezing cold, and the snow was beating down. It was a great football game, one of the best games I watched all season. There were turnovers, there was the weather, there was the score, the ramifications of the game – it was a great game."

*(on his thoughts of Arizona)
*"I'm having a great time. It's nice to be out of the cold weather where we are from. To be down here in Phoenix, and Glendale, that was the goal at the beginning of the year. So, we are happy to be here and happy to experience all of this."

(on the ankle and if it's really okay)
"It's doing good. I'm feeling better each day. I'm glad we had the week off and I had the chance to rest a little bit. I really feel that by the game it's going to feel great, and there will be no issues. Not that I can run anyway, but hopefully I'll be able to skirt around some of those guys who are trying to tear my head off."
