Tras casi tres cuartos de juego para el olvido, donde las cosas ya se daban por perdidas, Tom Brady se pone a su equipo al hombro y logra esta noche una histórica victoria de 34-28 frente a los Atlanta Falcons.
Una victoria nunca antes vista en la historia de los Super Bowls ya que después de un déficit de 25 puntos, los Patriot en tiempo extra, a través un acarreo de 2 yardas de su RB James White, logra convertirse en el primer equipo en la historia de la NFL de ganar 5 Super Bowls.
*"Este es sin lugar a dudas el más dulce, y me enorgullezco de decir que por 5ta ocasión los Patriots son campeones del mundo", dijo el dueño del equipo tras recibir el trofeo.*
"Tenemos grandes jugadores que son duros y que compiten. Pensábamos que iban a competir por 60 minutos, pero tomó un poco más esta noche", agregó Belichick durante la ceremonia de entrega del trofeo".
Belichick y Brady se convierten en el primer dúo entrenador-QB en ganar 5 anillos de Super Bowl. Igualmente, Brady logra otro record, es el primer jugador de la NFL en ganar 3 veces el premio MVP como el mejor jugador del partido.
Las acciones que importan
Después de casi primero tres cuartos de juego, con un marcador 28-3 en contra, donde nada resultaba, el equipo de New England recién empieza a ver la luz cuando Brady anota su primer TD de la noche tras un pase a James White de 5 yardas, un TD que vino acompañado de un gol de campo fallido dejando el marcador 9-28.
Los Patriots tímidamente se vuelven a hacer presente en el marcador cuando anotan su segundo gol de campo acortando el juego 12-28.
La defensa, después de solo 3 jugadas (gracias a un 'strip sack' de Dont'a Hightower que es recuperado por Alan Branch), otra vez regresa el balón a su ofensiva y esta vez Brady vuelve a sumar de 7, mejor dicho de 8, tras el TD de Amendola de 6 yardas y el two-point convertion del RB James White. Con el marcador 20-28, y de la manera en que los Patriots estaban jugando, ya nada parecía imposible.
Solo quedaban 5:56 en el reloj y los Falcons intentar extender la ventaja, pero su QB Matt Ryan es capturado por Trey Flowers (pérdida de 12 yardas) y una penalidad de 10 yardas obliga al equipo de Atlanta a devolver el balón en una situación de 4 y 33.
Con 3:30 en el reloj Brady orquesta la marcha del partido desde su propia yarda 9. El QB contó en esta histórica marcha con la colaboración de: Chris Hogan (16 yardas), Malcolm Mitchell (11 yardas), Julian Edelman (realizando una acrobática recepción 23 yardas que finalmente no tocó el gramado y que pasará a ser una de las recepciones más increíbles de los Super Bowls) y James White (con tres pases seguidos de 13, 7 y un TD de 1 yarda).
"No podía creerlo, es una de las más grandes recepciones [que he visto]. Hemos estado en el otro lado de esas recepciones espectaculares, es bueno que esta vez nos haya favorecido… No sé cómo la receptó", dijo Brady de la recepción de Edelman.
Seguidamente los Pats van por el empate a través de otro two-point-conversion, el cual es anotado por el WR Danny Amendola.
Una espectacular marcha de 10 jugadas, 91 yardas y de solo 2:33.
A estas alturas los Patriots ya habían logrado lo impensado, lo que nunca antes se había visto, empatar tras un déficit de 25 puntos. Después de un rápido intento fallido de los Falcons, el partido se va a sobretiempo (primera vez en la historia de los Super Bowls que un juego se va a sobretiempo).
Los Patriots ganan la moneda al aire y eligen recibir el balón.
Empezando desde su yarda 25 Brady orquesta la parte final del 'comeback' de la historia de la NFL y otra vez, con White (6 yardas), Amendola (14 yardas), Hogan (18 yardas), Edelman (15 yardas), una interferencia a Bennett de parte de los Falcons (13 yardas) y finalmente un TD de 2 yardas de White, los Patriots se ponen adelante 34-28 y logran el quinto título de su historia.
"Esta vez estando abajo 25 puntos es difícil imaginar que ganaríamos. Se necesitó de muchas grandes jugadas y así es que se juega, es un juego de 60 minutos", dijo Brady en su conferencia.
¡La hazaña se había logrado!
Brady terminó su impresionante actuación (que lo hizo merecedor del MVP del partido) completando 43 de 61, 466 yardas, 2 TDs.
Conclusión
Creo que no hay palabras para expresar lo vivido esta noche, no solo por nosotros sino por todos ustedes, los fans que nos han acompañado a lo largo de la temporada y de los nuevos fans que miran con admiración lo que este equipo es capaz de hacer.
A ustedes no tengo que decirles de qué está hecho este equipo. Ustedes lo saben y lo viven. Ustedes lo defienden y quizás por eso reciben agravios de otros fans.
