Game Notes: Patriots at Redskins

Tom Brady led the Patriots on two scoring drives in the first half that ended in touchdown passes to WR Randy Moss. The following are game notes from the Patriots preseason game against the Washington Redskins on Friday, August 28, 2009.

  • The Patriots first offensive unit has outscored its opponent 41-23 so far in this preseason. (played entire first half at Philadelphia, the first quarter vs. Cincinnati and the first half at Washington).
  • The Redskins first quarter touchdown was the first touchdown against the Patriots first defense in the 2009 preseason. The Patriots first defense did not allow a touchdown in their first nine drives in the preseason (six at Philadelphia and three vs. Cincinnati).
  • QB Tom Bray started the game and finished 12-of-19 for 150 yards with two touchdowns and a 122.7 quarterback rating. Brady led the Patriots to 17 first half points.
  • Brady led the Patriots on two scoring drives in the first half that ended in touchdown passes to WR Randy Moss. He capped a seven-play, 73-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Moss in the first quarter and then finished a nine-play, 84-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Moss in the second quarter.
  • Moss, who enters the 2009 season second in NFL history with 32 games with two or more touchdown receptions, had touchdown catches of 26 and 27 yards in the first half. Jerry Rice is first in NFL history with 43 games with at least two touchdown receptions.
  • Moss, who enters the 2009 season second in NFL history with 59 career 100-yard receiving games, finished with six receptions for 90 yards in the first half. Jerry Rice is first in NFL history with 76 100-yard games.
  • CB Jonathan Wilhite picked off a QB Colt Brennan pass in the third quarter and raced 99 yards untouched for a touchdown to break a 17-17 tie. The Patriots have had a 99-yard and a 100-yard interception returned for a touchdown in regular season play. S Rick Sanford had a 99-yard interception return at Chicago (12-5-82). CB Jimmy Hitchcock set the Patriots record with a 100-yard interception returned for a touchdown vs. Miami (11-23-97).
  • PK Stephen Gostkowski made a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter and a game-winning 30-yard field goal with just 0:08 remaining in the game to give the Patriots a 27-24 victory over the Redskins.. He has now connected on 12 straight preseason field goal attempts, dating back to the 2007 preseason-finale.
  • RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has the three longest runs of the Patriots preseason. He had a 17-yard run in each of the Patriots first two preseason games and added a 22-yard run in the third quarter against Washington.
  • Rookie Pat Chung returned 4 punts for 48 yards, including a 33-yarder with less than two minutes to play to set up the game-winning 30-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, leaving just 0:08 on the clock. A two-time special teams player of the year at Oregon, Pat Chung has now had a hand in both preseason victories. In the preseason opener in Philadelphia, Chung blocked a 44-yard attempt by David Akers at the end of the first half in a 27-25 victory over the Eagles (8/13).
