From the Hart: Pats 2nd in new AP poll

The Associated Press has branched out and is now doing an AP Pro32 NFL poll. The poll tallies the votes from 12 media members who cover the NFL on a regular basis, and will be updated each week throughout the NFL season.

When we think of AP polls, we generally are talking about either college football or college basketball.

But the Associated Press has branched out and is now doing an AP Pro32 NFL poll. The poll tallies the votes from 12 media members who cover the NFL on a regular basis, and will be updated each week throughout the NFL season. (Still won't be in the same league as the Wilson Hart power index!)

The AP released the inaugural, preseason edition of the poll this week and the Patriots came in second, trailing only the Packers. Green Bay got five first-place votes and a total of 374 points. The defending Super Bowl champion Giants also received five first-place votes, while the Patriots got just two. But New England topped New York in the poll with a total of 369 points as compared to 362.

New England was not ranked lower than third by any of the 12 voters.

The rest of the top five included the 49ers and Ravens.

The next edition of the poll will be released on Sept. 4, just prior to the start of the regular season.
