Patriots sign veteran TE Bo Scaife; Release three players

The New England Patriots announced the signing of veteran TE Bo Scaife today. In addition, the Patriots released DL Markell Carter, TE Nick Melillo and OL Jon Opperud.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced the signing of veteran TE Bo Scaife today. In addition, the Patriots released DL Markell Carter, TE Nick Melillo and OL Jon Opperud.

Scaife, 31, is veteran of six NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He joined the team as a sixth-round draft pick (179th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Texas. The 6-foot-3 inch, 249-pounder has played in 90 NFL games with 62 starts and has recorded 251 receptions for 2,383 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last season, he started in 13 of 14 games and finished with 36 receptions for 318 yards and four touchdowns.

Carter, 22, was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round (194th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Central Arkansas. The 6-foot-4, 248-pounder spent the 2011 season on the New England practice squad.

Melillo, 23, is a rookie free agent from Kentucky who was signed by the Patriots on May 29, 2012. The 6-foot-2 inch, 226-pounder played in 32 games over the last three seasons for Kentucky after transferring from Lindenwood University.

Opperud, 22, was originally signed by Seattle as a rookie free agent on April 29, 2012 out of Montana and was released by the Seahawks on May 15, 2012. He was signed by the Patriots on June 7, 2012. The 6-foot-7 inch, 300-pounder was a three-year starter for Montana.
