The New England Patriots will close out the preseason with a familiar foe when they travel to face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. It will mark the 32nd meeting in the preseason between the two teams, the Patriots' most frequent preseason opponent. The Patriots and Giants met in the preseason finale for 16 straight seasons (2005-19 and 2021), rotating who was the home team, and then in the first game of the season in 2022.

After improving to a 2-0 preseason record with a 20-12 win at Minnesota last week, the Patriots will be looking for their fifth perfect preseason record. The team finished undefeated in the preseason in 2021, 2003, 1981 and 1978.

MOST FREQUENT PRESEASON OPPONENTS

The Patriots and the Giants will meet for the 32nd time in the preseason, making the team the Patriots' most frequent preseason opponent. Philadelphia and Washington are tied as the second-most frequent opponents with 25 meetings each.

NEW ENGLAND TIES

In the decades leading up to the founding of the American Football League in 1960, many football fans in New England followed the Giants, a franchise founded in 1925. New England-based NFL outfits such as the Providence Steam Roller (1925-31), the Boston Redskins (1932-36) and the Boston Yanks (1944-48) folded or moved away, leaving the Giants as the closest NFL team to New England until the Patriots franchise inaugurated play in the 1960 season.

SERIES HISTORY

The New England Patriots and the New York Giants will meet in the preseason for the 32nd time. The two teams met in the preseason for 17 straight seasons (2005-22) (not including the 2020 season when preseason was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic). However, in a break from a 16-year streak, the Patriots and Giants met in the 2022 preseason opener rather than squaring off in the preseason finale.

The clubs have been frequent preseason opponents recently, squaring off in the preseason openers for three straight years from 2001-03 and resuming the series in 2005 when they started to meet in the preseason finale.

The Patriots have faced the Giants more than any other team in the preseason with 31 matchups. Philadelphia and Washington are second with 25 preseason games.

The teams played three times during the 2007 and 2011 seasons with meetings in the preseason, the regular season and in the Super Bowl. The Patriots and Giants faced each other twice in 2019 with a preseason and a regular season meeting in Foxborough. The Patriots lost the preseason finale 31-29 and then won the regular season matchup, 35-14.

Overall, the Giants hold a 20-11 advantage in the preseason series, while the Patriots claim a 7-5 edge in the regular season play.
