Jets coach Edwards welcomes baby daughter

New York Jets coach Herman Edwards missed the team's evening practice to be with his wife, Lia, who gave birth to the couple's first child -- a daughter named Gabrielle Lee.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Aug. 10, 2005) -- New York Jets coach Herman Edwards missed the team's evening practice to be with his wife, Lia, who gave birth to the couple's first child -- a daughter named Gabrielle Lee.

She was born at 6:46 p.m. and weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces. This is Edwards' second child; he also has a son, Marcus, from another relationship.

Ron Colangelo, the Jets' vice president of public relations, said Edwards told him his wife and daughter were doing fine.

Assistant head coach Mike Westhoff, also the Jets' special-teams coordinator, ran the team in Edwards' absence. Colangelo said Edwards told him it was the first time in 26 years as a player and coach he missed a practice.

Edwards, 51, ran practice in the morning and left for a Long Island hospital to be with his wife around 4:30 p.m.
