Patriots.com News Blitz - 08/12/2009

In today's blitz, see what position battle is flying under the radar and read Tom Brady's comments about the preseason opener.

The long-snapper position was never a concern for the Patriots, at least for the last eight seasons. Entering the 2009 training camp without Lonnie Paxton, who reunited with Josh McDaniels in Denver, the team has a void to fill. The Patriots are looking to veteran Nathan Hodelor rookie sixth-round pick Jake Ingram to do just that. According to the Boston Globe, Hodel could step in based on experience or the team could attempt to "mold a Paxton-type long snapper of the future" out of Ingram. No team carries two long snappers meaning one will be cut.

In other news, QB Tom Bradyis ready. After sustaining a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 last year, Brady is poised to get reps in the preseason opener in Philadelphia Thursday night. According to the Boston Globe, Brady expects to play based on his progress during training camp. "There is no reason why I wouldn't. I've been out here doing everything", he said. Also, read Brady's reflections on the mental aspect of such an injury.
