Patriots.com News Blitz - 9/5/2006

In today's News Blitz, the Patriots pick up two new receivers from around the AFC. Doug Gabriel arrives from the Raiders only a few days after working with their starting offense.

*The Boston Globe*'s Mike Reiss features Rodney Harrison, who is planning to play in Sunday's season opener against the Bills. Harrison was on the field for about 15 plays in the third exhibition game, and for 10 in the exhibition finale. He said he believes the experience was a positive one as he works his way back from three torn knee ligaments.

Dan Pires of the *Standard Times* also has a story on Harrison's return.

*The Boston Globe* also offers information on two new receivers acquired recently by the Pats. The Patriots could have one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL, although there is one area of uncertainty: Who's going to play wide receiver and make defenses respect the outside-the-numbers passing game?

*Boston Herald* writer Mike Felgar takes a look at the receiving corps, including new receiver Doug Gabriel, who's just arrived from the Raiders.

*The Providence Journal'*s* *Shalise Manza Young also reports that Gabriel has his play book and is poring over it in an attempt to assimilate to the Patriots offense.

*Hartford Courant* writer Alan Greenberg also features Gabriel. "I've been used everywhere," Gabriel said. "Anything they want me to do, I'll do."

*Worcester Telegram & Gazette* writer Rich Garven also has a feature on Gabriel and Jonathan Smith.

Mark Farinella of the *Sun Chronicle* reports on Gabriel and how he's fitting in.

Johnathan Sullivan is relieved to be able to focus his attention on football, reports Albert Breer in the *Boston Herald*. "You hear more talk about football than outside of football and that definitely did it for me," said Sullivan, who claims he has lost 10 pounds (down to 310) since the start of camp. "Basically, I got that love of the game again. After being through what I've been through, it feels good to be around people who are positive all the time."

*The Boston Herald*'s Mike Felgar takes a look at the Patriots injuries entering the Bills game. According to Felgar, Maroney may have a knee injury. Maroney participated at practice with a brace around his left knee, but without a red (non-contact) jersey. While he seemed to run well, don't expect to see Maroney on Sunday.

*Woonsocket Call* writer Michael Parenti also has a story on the possibility that Maroney won't play on Sunday.

*The Providence Journal* checks in with rookie standout lineman Ryan O'Callaghan. "I never really expected for it to be easy or hard. It's been a lot of fun so far, and it's not easy by any means, but I didn't come in here with any preconceived ideas of what it was going to be like," he said.

Rich Garven of the *Worcester Telegram & Gazette* reports on Deion Branch.
