Patriots Postgame Quotes - 8/18/2011

New England Patriots players comment on their Preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from Raymond James Stadium on Thursday, August 18, 2011.

HEAD COACH BILL BELICHICK

(Opening comment)
"I thought we stopped them with defense tonight. One thing we wanted to do was get off to a good start; we definitely didn't do that last week. I thought we had a little, you know, energy. We were able to score and get the ball back, score again. I thought there were some positives there. We still need to be more consistent. We really didn't have a good second half. [We] turned the ball over, didn't play very good on defense, had too many penalties; penalties in the second quarter, too. We got a good evaluation of our conditioning down here, it's a good warm night. I think we were able to see a lot of things that we still need.

We have a lot of work to do to sharpen up, but I think we played competitively. There were a few things we need to work on, too. We [will] get back out there, have a nice, long week getting ready for Detroit, so we'll be able to hopefully clean up a few loose ends and continue to take another step in our preparation for the regular season."

(On QB Tom Brady)
"He did some good things, had some other things that weren't so good. Tom did a good job moving the offense. I thought we had a good tempo out there. There are some things we need to sharpen up on too."

(On preparing his team)
"I'm just trying to coach a team and make them play better. Some of the things we didn't cover came up in the game. I'm just trying to do the best I can to help our team improve. We still have a long way to go. We have a lot of work to do. I have to do a better job of that."

(On hits to the helmet)
"You'll have to talk to the league about that. They're the ones that make the rules and the officials are the ones that call them. All we can do is go out there and play the game."

(On RB Danny Woodhead)
"I saw him in the locker room. He seemed all right. I don't know, we'll see how it goes."

QB TOM BRADY

(On his first game action)
"It was fun. It's been awhile since we've had a chance to be out there. I think a lot of guys were antsy to get out there. [I'm] glad we put some points on the board. Obviously there are a lot of thing we can do better too, but we'll use it as a great tool for us to get better, and hopefully come out and play better next week."

(On getting WR Chad Ochocinco)
"It's just [that] he's really finding a roll for himself. He's been practicing hard. He's very competitive. It's good group we have out there, so we just go to continue to build. All of us we haven't played in a long time, so it's great for us to be out there. It will be good for us to get back to practice this week, so we can take what we know from the game and try to get better in practice."

(On the New England offensive line)
"It was a good night and they always do a great job, so they take a lot of pride in that. It's a group that's been together for a while now. […] I thought we ran the ball really well [and] stayed out of negative plays for the most part. When you ever can stay on track like that, you put a bunch of good plays together. "

(On his performance in the first half)
"I mean, we expect to go out there and score. We were good in the red area. One drive we got penalized and didn't make much out of that drive, and the last one we didn't drive, so, while there was some good, there was plenty of bad. I'm sure I'm going to see the film tomorrow and be disappointed with some of the things that I wish I could have done better. We just got to build on it and understand those things we did wrong and try to make it right."

DE ANDRE CARTER

(On his game performance)
"I'll leave that up to the coaches. I am definitely my own worst critic [because] there is always room for improvement and stuff, get a feel to the guys next to me. Overall I did my best to play fast but still remain humble and still remain hungry."

(On Donald Penn's performance against him)
"He did, there are some pass rushes that I wish I could take back. But overall I think he did, we just have to see how it goes on film. I think sometimes football players you get so much in the zone, you don't really know what you are doing until the days that we watch film."

(On how he has been adjusting to different defensive packages)
"Mainly through practice and also through games so you know, I think that with any defense is all about fits; where you belong along with where the guy next to you belongs. Once you have developed a concept and an understanding, then sky's the limit as far as making big plays."

RB BENJARVUS GREEN-ELLIS

(On offense)
"We just want to continue to go out there each and every day at practice and work hard and make sure we know that we're doing the things we know we're capable of doing. And we just don't want to come out with any turnovers and give them any balls. So, we just want to go out there and execute."

(On offensive potential)
"We just have to keep coming to practice every day and working hard, we are as good as however hard we work when we are in practice."

(On the offensive-line)
"Everyone put their best foot forward out on the offensive line but the receivers and everyone were just working hard out there to make sure on all plays that everyone is doing their job."

(On Danny Woodhead hit)
"It's football, it's a physical game. We are all going to take hits and dings from time to time. But he's a tough guy so we'll see how he progresses or whatever's going on with him."

TE AARON HERNANDEZ

(On being out there with the first team offense)
"It just felt good to see how our team is going look and everyone being out there together and it felt good."

(On strong individual performance)
"It felt good, just give us plays and your numbers called, they tell you to go out there and make a play and Tom (Brady) came to me and I just tried to make a play for him."

(On being wide open)
"I was pretty open, but great ball from the quarterback and all I had to do was catch it."

(On good play calling)
"We have great coaches, they put us in the right place and they know what's going to be open and we have a quarterback that's going to get us the ball. So, he knows we're going to be open and he finds us."

(On progress of team)
"We just take it day by day, and we still have a long way to go."

LB JEROD MAYO

(On defensive domination early in the game)
"We came out and coach was talking about kind of starting really fast.  That was one of our main goals today and I think that we did a pretty good job with that."

(On how the offensive starters put them in a position to be successful early on)
"I think we all played pretty good, but at the same time we still have a lot of work to do. I'm sure we will watch the film tomorrow and go back to the drawing board."

(On comfort level with the defense)
"I feel comfortable and this is my fourth year and coach Belichick is doing different things with me. Whether it be making the big plays, or just making a bunch of tackles, whatever he's got is okay."

(On being freed up on defense and dictating the action)
"It does feel good having those big work horses in front of me.  All those guys played well tonight and it just feels good to be able to run around with them."

WR CHAD OCHOCINCO

(On getting game action for the first time)
"It felt good, it felt good finally getting out there. I'm behind the eight-ball tremendously though. It's different from practice, being in the game, I have to get the game tempo, that's about it.  It felt good for us to start. I finally get a feel for it on the tempo, the way Tom [Brady] operates the way, everybody is like a machine out there. I'm that one part that isn't up to speed with everybody else."

(On that not being the case on the touchdown)
"That's because of the person behind the offense that's playing quarterback…for some reason it always works and I got a long way to go, personally."

(On what he means by having a long way to go)
"That comfort zone, comfort zone, comfort zone. Any time…it's like being married. As time goes on you gel and you get comfortable with that person and offense and I'm just not comfortable yet. I want to hurry up and get that feeling to where I can somewhat be me and that's about it."

(On putting too much pressure on himself)
"I got to get there now. I should have been there yesterday.  I got to get on the eight ball."

(On if it's just getting more reps and practice)
"Just got to keep going. You got to think, I got here late, there was no offseason program.  So everything just has to speed up."

(On if he's frustrated)
"No. I don't get frustrated; it's a waste of energy."

(On the fact that he didn't celebrate the touchdown)
"I play for Belichick now."

(On what he and Belichick were communicating on)
"Just coaching, coaching back and forth, which I like, which I need.  I need people to stay in my ear, I need Tom Brady, I need all of them. I need them to stay in my ear constantly, especially in the preseason.  The more info the more I can absorb and become a sponge and learn from those guys that have been here and understand the system the more comfortable I get, the more relaxed I am the better I play."

(On there being no more celebrations for Patriot Ochocinco)
"I play for Belichick."

WR WES WELKER

(On whether the offense is where they need to be)
"I don't know, I think we got to go back and look at the tape and see where we're at. I still think there is a lot of progress we could make and I'm sure everybody feels that way. [There were] some plays we could have done better on and I'm sure we'll get those corrections fixed and build on from this game."

(On the offense's operation)
"It was pretty smooth for the most part. Tom is Tom, he's out there making his reads and you know, trying to put everybody in the right position and trying to make the offense successful and he does a great job of that. I'm sure he's probably not happy with his performance as he usually is. I think that all of us have a lot of work to do and we understand that and we know that we are going to comeback, make corrections and do better next time."

(Thoughts on how the first string offense did the first half)
"You know I think we made some good steps in doing some good things and I still feel there is a lot of stuff we can do a lot better and a lot progress we can make going forward. But I think it was a good start for us and we'll keep on moving forward and keep on getting better."
