The New England Patriots selected DL Michael Buchanan with the 226th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots have selected Illinois defensive end/outside linebacker Michael Buchanan in the seventh round of the NFL draft on Saturday.

Buchanan was named the Illini's Outstanding defensive player last season after starting all 12 games and registering a team-best 4 1-2 sacks. He had 7 1-2 sacks as a junior.

The Patriots had acquired the seventh-round pick from Tampa Bay in addition to cornerback Aqib Talib last season in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
