The 5-foot-11-inch Womack was drafted in the seventh round of the 2002 draft and was the 237th overall selection out of the University of Virginia. The shifty runner finished his four-year career with the Cavaliers totaling 2,207 yards rushing on 429 carries and scored 13 touchdowns.

Womack is currently recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered in a postseason all-star game. He also suffered an ACL injury earlier during his senior season. As such, Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick has discussed the possibility during the off season of Womack being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would leave the door open for him to suit up and join the team at some point during the season.

The 24-year-old Womack joins defensive end Jarvis Green as the first two Patriots draft picks to ink deals.
