Williams' release a good sign for Vereen

News from Gillette Stadium as the Patriots prepare for their next opponent, the Carolina Panthers.

Just before Friday's practice, New England released wide receiver LaQuan Williams, who was signed just last week. His departure opens up a spot on the 53-man active roster which will likely be filled by running back Shane Vereen sometime before Monday night's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Vereen (left wrist) has been on the shelf since injuring himself in the season opener at Buffalo. He was placed on the injured reserve/designated-to-return list, but began practicing again a few weeks ago. This game in Charlotte is his first opportunity, however, to return to game action, if the team chooses to activate him. All signs seem to point toward that eventuality.

Meanwhile, at practice, safety Steve Gregory (right thumb) has now missed four straight sessions, going back to last week. It's unlikely he'll be active Monday night against the Panthers.
