FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots acquired veteran wide receiver Doug Gabriel in a trade with the Oakland Raiders today in exchange for an undisclosed draft choice. The Patriots also announced that running back Patrick Pass has been placed on the reserve/PUP list and that linebacker Barry Gardner and safety Tebucky Jones have been placed on the reserve/injured list. Gardner and Jones will miss the remainder of the 2006 season with leg injuries. Additionally, the Patriots announced that nine players have been released in compliance with the NFL's regular-season active roster limit, which went into effect at 6:00 p.m. EDT. Gabriel, 26, is entering his fourth NFL season after playing in 42 games with seven starts for the Oakland Raiders from 2003-05. The 6-foot-2-inch, 215-pound wide receiver was originally selected by the Raiders in the fifth round (167th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Central Florida. In his NFL career, Gabriel has totaled 71 receptions for 1,122 yards (15.8 avg.) and five touchdowns. Additionally, the Miami native has recorded 86 career kickoff returns for 1,850 yards (21.5 avg.), including an 85-yard touchdown return in 2003. Last season with Oakland, Gabriel recorded a career-high 37 receptions for 554 yards (15.0 avg.) and three touchdowns. In 2004, he recorded 33 catches for 551 yards (16.7 avg.) and two touchdowns.
