Patriots place four on IR; Release one

The New England Patriots made a series of roster moves to get down to the NFL Mandatory 75-man limit today. The Patriots placed S Josh Barrett (shoulder), CB Leigh Bodden (shoulder), DB Brett Lockett (chest) and DL Darryl Richard (foot) on injured reserve and released DB Terrence Johnson.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots made a series of roster moves to get down to the NFL Mandatory 75-man limit today. The Patriots placed S Josh Barrett (shoulder), CB Leigh Bodden (shoulder), DB Brett Lockett (chest) and DL Darryl Richard (foot) on injured reserve and released DB Terrence Johnson.

Barrett, a 6-2, 225 pound safety from Arizona State, was claimed off waivers from Denver by the Patriots on August 6, 2010. He was originally drafted by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has played in 20 games with three starts during his two seasons in the NFL and has totaled 25 tackles on defense and 13 special teams tackles. Last season, he appeared in 14 games and finished with two tackles on defense and eight special teams tackles.

Bodden, 6-1, 193 pounds, originally joined New England on March 11, 2009. He was re-signed by New England on March 12, 2010. Last season, he started in 14 of the 15 contests he played in and tied for the team lead with five interceptions and led the team with 17 passes defensed. Bodden was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week (Week 11) for his performance in the Patriots' 31-14 win over the New York Jets (11/22) after tying a team record with three interceptions. He returned the first of his three interceptions in the Jets game 53 yards for a touchdown, the first interception return for a touchdown of his career.

Lockett, 6-1, 220 pounds, was claimed off waivers from Cleveland by the Patriots on Sept. 7, 2009. He was originally signed by the Browns as a rookie free agent out of UCLA on May 5, 2009. Last season with New England, he played in 10 games and finished with two tackles on defense and five special teams tackles.

Richard, 6-4, 295 pounds, spent the entire 2009 season on the New England practice squad after originally joining the team as a seventh-round draft pick (234th overall) out of Georgia Tech.

Johnson, 5-9, 190 pounds, was originally signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of California University of Pennsylvania on April 20, 2010. He was released by the Patriots on August 23, 2010 and then re-signed on August 29, 2010.
