Roster Breakdown: Safeties

The safety position has little depth as the Patriots head into Training Camp. We offer our analysis in the latest roster breakdown.

Locks:** Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon

Bubble: Nate Ebner, Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson, Jemea Thomas

Long shots: Kanorris Davis, Shamiel Gary

BREAKDOWN:** Obviously the Patriots will be keeping more than two safeties but to classify anyone other than McCourty and Harmon as locks would be premature. The spot opposite McCourty appears to be Harmon's to lose. If he falters it could put Chung, who returned after a disappointing free agent stint in Philadelphia, into the mix. Chung is not good in coverage and his undersized frame coupled with his aggressive style has led to injury problems in the past. Ebner and Wilson were exclusively special teamers a year ago but provide little depth on defense. Thomas is a versatile athlete drafted out of Georgia Tech. He'll be an interesting player to watch in camp. Davis saw time on the roster a year ago and could be in the mix as well. Gary is an undrafted free agent but with depth at the position an issue could surprise.
