Tom Brady Postgame Transcript: 'We just didn't play a good football game'

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady addresses the media following the team's Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins.

**

Q: **Were they better than you thought they would be?

TB:They have a good team and they always play pretty well down here, especially against us. We had a decent first half; I think we left some opportunities out there in the first half and in the second half. Obviously we didn't do anything in the third quarter and it led to a one dimensional team in the fourth quarter and we didn't make enough plays. Give them a lot of credit, they dealt with a lot of injuries and were pretty mentally tough. We've got to learn from it and get back to work. No one's going to feel sorry for us; the guys in the room have to dig deep and see if we can go out and get a win next week.

Q:Do you feel like you were let down in terms of protection?

TB:Those guys were working their tails off so it's a good front. We've got to do better in all areas. I've got to do a better job and that's kind of where I'll focus this week.

Q:Was it good to have Gronkowski back in the lineup to throw the ball to?

**

The New England Patriots visit Sun Life Stadium for their Week 1 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

TB: **Yeah, I mean he's a good player for us so I think all of us have to go out there and play a lot better that we played today. You can't play the way we played today and think we'll win a game this season. There's nothing that's positive to really take from it. The things that we were doing, I think this is a good way and a good example of if we do the things that we did today, you'll get beat. We played a good football team at home, we had a decent first half but you've got to put sixty minutes together if you're going to beat them.

Q:Do you think that conditioning was a factor?

TB:No, we've been practicing in this all summer so I don't think that played a part in it. Our execution was just terrible.

Q:You weren't gelling up front, did the substitutions affect that?

TB:Truthfully I don't think we were really gelling anywhere. There wasn't much positive from the quarterback position, the receiver position, the tight end position and the running back position. None of us can play like that and expect to win. All of us have to go out and do a much better job than we did today. We've got to take the coaching, understand what we need to do better and then go out and execute next week.

Q:How important is it for a guy who's been around to make sure that the mindset doesn't change?

TB:It's a long football season and you've got to make improvements throughout the course of the season. Whether you win or lose you're not going to be playing really perfect football, especially in September, but you've got to try to win these games. They're important games to win and they count the same. A win or loss counts the same in September as it does in December. We just didn't play a good football game. We got off to a decent start, we had some turnovers and we let them back into the game in the third quarter and then just couldn't do anything in the fourth quarter. We'll try to figure out the things that we did wrong, build on the good things, get rid of the bad things hopefully that will put us in a better place next week.

Q:What was the change in the second half that you saw?

TB:I think our execution was just terrible. We just couldn't do anything offensively, we couldn't sustain drives and we couldn't get a first down. We couldn't run it and we couldn't throw it. It was just a bad day.

Q:Were you surprised that after their three linebackers were out of the game you couldn't take advantage of it?

**

TB: **I know but like I said they had some guys that came in and did a good job. 53

Q:Jelani Jenkins) and Trusnik did a good job. They have some good players and depth at that position, they've got a good front and they have good players in the secondary that make you earn it. We just couldn't sustain anything. We just had too many drives where we sputtered and starting in the second half and the third quarter, you can't play football that way.

Q:Did you have a sense that Gronkowski was a little behind?

TB:Like I said, the guys in the blue jerseys, I don't think any of us played very well so I don't think that was Gronk or anybody in particular. This is a team sport and we all rely on each other, I think we play with anticipation and we communicate well. We try to go out there and play for each other and we play to win. I think today we just didn't do the things that we need to do to win. You can't turn the ball over like we turned it over. You can't give them short field and we had opportunities in the pass and the run game to make more yards than we did and we just didn't do anything with it.

Q:Were you affected by the rush?

TB:That's a good question. I just don't think you want to stand back there and hold the ball when you know they're bearing down. You just try to pick guys out and make the throws but there's time when you look on the film and you had more time than you think and that's part of playing football. I've got to do a lot better job using my instincts to help our team move the ball and score points.

Q:How's your calf?

TB:It's good, thanks for asking.
