FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed DL Anthony Johnson to the practice squad. Johnson was released by the Patriots on Sept. 26, 2016.
In addition, the Patriots released OL Ian Silberman from the practice squad.
Johnson, 23, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Miami Dolphins on May 12, 2014, out of Louisiana State. The 6-foot-2, 295-pounder, made the Miami 53-man roster as a rookie and played in seven games, recording two tackles and recovering one fumble. He was released by Miami at the end of training camp in 2015 and was signed by the Washington Redskins' practice squad in November. Johnson was released by Washington on May 2, 2016. Johnson was signed by the Patriots on May 9, 2016 and played in two games in 2016 with the Patriots, accumulating five total tackles and one quarterback hit.
Silberman, 23, was signed to the New England practice squad on Sept. 15, 2016. He originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick (190th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers out of Boston College in 2015. The 6-foot-5, 306-pounder, played in one game as a rookie last season, seeing action vs. Minnesota on Sept. 14 on special teams. He was released by the 49ers on Aug. 28, 2016. Silberman began his college career at Florida. After graduating, he used his final season of eligibility at Boston College where he started all 12 games at guard.
