Like most former college athletes, New England Patriots players are proud of their alma maters.
Towards the end of this month, some of these players may have the opportunity to cheer on their universities on their own field here in Foxborough.
Gillette Stadium is excited to welcome the college lacrosse community back to the region for the 2025 NCAA Men's and Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships. From the weekend of May 23 through May 26, the balls and helmets used for play will look much different than those used for football, and be accompanied by sticks and goals.
The last time the NCAA Lacrosse Championships were held at Gillette Stadium was in 2018, with Yale taking home a Division I men's title. Maryland, who took home the hardware in 2017 in both men's and women's championships, also secured their victories in Foxborough.
Patriots wide receiver Mack Hollins, originally from Maryland, grew up playing lacrosse as well as football.
"If you didn't play lacrosse, you were kind of the weirdo," Hollins previously told the Miami Herald of growing up a two-sport athlete in Wootton, Maryland.
"It's like down south, if you didn't play football. That's how it is in Maryland. You better play lacrosse."
Hollins went on to play football at the University of North Carolina, as did quarterback Drake Maye. Both the Tar Heels men's and women's teams will be represented in the tournament this year.
