Reports: WR Stevie Johnson chooses Chargers over Patriots

On Monday reports indicated that free agent wide receiver Stevie Johnson was "very likely" to sign with the Patriots.

But he left Foxborough without a deal in place and less than 24 hours later has apparently decided to sign with the San Diego Chargers.

NBC4 in Washington, which originally reported Johnson's likelihood of signing with New England, now reports that Johnson's decision to choose the Chargers over the Patriots came, at least in part, due to his family. NFL Network confirm Johnson's plans to sign with San Diego.

The 28-year-old Johnson is a veteran of seven NFL seasons, the first six in Buffalo before spending last year in San Francisco. The 6-2, 207-pound pass catcher had three straight 16-game, 1,000-yard seasons for the Bills from 2010-12. Johnson has 31 career touchdowns, including a career-high 10 in 2010.

But he was traded to the 49ers last offseason. He started just one of 13 games played in San Francisco, catching a mere 35 passes for 435 yards and three scores, his lowest output since 2009.
