Biography

Clinton McMillan joins the Patriots in 2025 as defensive line coach. He comes to New England after serving four seasons in various defensive roles at the Tennessee Titans. Most recently, McMillan served as assistant defensive line/pass rush specialist in Tennessee last season.

As an assistant defensive line/pass rush specialist in 2023, McMillan's group allowed an average of 3.81 rushing yards per attempt, ranking seventh in the NFL. In addition, Tennessee's 37.7% defensive red-zone efficiency rate was atop the NFL in 2023. The Titans defense also tied for the fourth-fewest rushing touchdowns (10) and the fifth-fewest overall touchdowns allowed (33).

In 2022, the Titans ranked first in the NFL in rushing defense (76.9 opponent rushing yards per game) with McMillan as a defensive line assistant. Additionally, DT Jeffery Simmons was named to the Pro Bowl after posting 7.5 sacks.

McMillan spent the 2021 season working with the outside linebackers in Tennessee. The group was led by Harold Landry III, who recorded a career-high 12 sacks, earning him Pro Bowl Honors for the first time in his career.

Prior to Tennessee, McMillan spent one season as a senior analyst at Florida State in 2020, a group that had nine first-time starters. Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was named first time All-ACC before becoming a second-round NFL Draft pick by the Los Angeles Chargers.

From 2017-19, McMillan served as the defensive run game coordinator and co-special teams coordinator at the University of Tennessee-Martin. In 2019, he helped UT Martin lead the Ohio Valley Conference with 25 sacks. In addition, the Skyhawks ranked among national leaders in several categories, including blocked kicks (9th), punt return defense (10th), blocked punts (11th) and defensive touchdowns (11th). During the 2018 season, UT Martin's defense ranked 17th nationally in tackles for loss (7.6 per game).

UT Martin garnered national attention in McMillan's first year at the school in 2017, ranking first nationally in red-zone defense (60.6 percent), fourth in scoring defense (14.3 points per game), sixth in total defense (273.8 yards per game), and sixth on third-down conversion (28.7 percent).

McMillan began his coaching career at Sanford Seminole High School and Winter Park High School before serving as a graduate assistant at Weber State from 2012-13. From 2014-16, McMillan became a graduate assistant at Marshall, helping the Thundering Herd to a conference championship and back-to-back bowl appearances. Prior to his stint at UT Martin, McMillan was hired as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Ohio Dominican.

PLAYING

McMillan played four seasons at the University of Florida from 2004-07. He appeared in 48 career games at defensive tackle for the Gators. As a senior, he started all 13 games and recorded 23 tackles in 2007. In 2006, he was a member of the BCS National Championship team under Head Coach Urban Meyer.

PERSONAL

A native of Oviedo, Fla., McMillan earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Florida in 2007 and a master's degree in education from Marshall University in 2016. McMillan and his wife, Mariah, have a daughter, Journie.
