Rookie Malcolm Mitchell has already started to use his new platform in the NFL to make an impact. Malcolm is a football player, book club member, children’s book author and now he is advocating for students to participate in summer reading.

Malcolm has teamed up with Learning Ally, a nonprofit that supports students of all ages, veterans and lifelong learners who read and learn differently due to dyslexia, blindness, visual impairment and other disabilities, to encourage reading even when school is out of session. The Summer Reading Together program follows a sports theme of, "Ready, set, read!" The program is designed for students with print disabilities, according to the website.

To show his support, Malcolm dedicated a video to Learning Ally students to get them amped about summer reading.

Reading every day during the summer is important to keep students engaged and practicing, which Malcolm said is crucial.

"Dyslexia affects 8.5 million students in the U.S. – that's every one in five students. These students should have a chance to read just like every other kid. Learning Ally gives these kids a great opportunity to read," Malcolm said in a press release. "Just like football, reading takes a lot of practice, and I think it's important that kids read 20 minutes a day outside the classroom, especially striving readers.  I hope everyone will enjoy participating in Learning Ally's #SRT16 program and finish the summer strong to get ready to head back to school.  I can't wait to see all the great pictures and hear stories of how kids are reading differently.  Keep Reading!"

In addition to the program, Malcolm is helping to promote the accompanying social media challenge, which encourages Learning Ally students to read at least 20 minutes a day and post photos of where and what they're read during the summer using the hashtag #SRT16.

The winner of the challenge will receive an autographed copy of Malcolm's book, "The Magician's Hat."

Malcolm may be busy reading the Patriots playbook this summer, but his encouragement will help students pick up a book and keep reading for the fun of it.
